Dubai Floods: Year's Worth of Rain Unleashes Flash Flooding

Massive Rainstorm Pounds Dubai, Turning Roads into Rivers

April 16, 2024

An unprecedented downpour drenched Dubai on Tuesday, with a year's worth of rainfall unleashing devastating flash floods. The city-state was submerged as roads transformed into raging rivers and homes were inundated with rushing water. The torrential rain, which began shortly after midnight, caused widespread disruption, leaving thousands of residents stranded and businesses closed.

According to the National Center of Meteorology, more than 120mm (47 inches) of rain fell on Dubai within a 24-hour period. The heavy downpours were also recorded in neighboring Abu Dhabi, where thunder and lightning awakened residents and illuminated the sky.

The flooding brought traffic to a standstill, with vehicles submerged in waterlogged streets. Many roads were closed, including the vital Sheikh Zayed Road, which connects Dubai to Abu Dhabi. Metro stations were also closed, leaving commuters unable to reach their destinations.

Affected residents were evacuated from their homes and taken to temporary shelters. The Dubai Mall, one of the world's largest shopping centers, was forced to close its doors due to flooding. Operations at Dubai International Airport were briefly halted as flights were diverted to other airports in the region.

The sudden downpour has raised concerns about the city's drainage system, which has been overwhelmed by the intense rainfall. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas. Emergency services are working around the clock to respond to the flooding and provide assistance to those affected.
